Silver Eagle Dollar Rolls and Coin Packaging
How US silver eagle bullion coins are packaged in coin tubes
The most popular version of the US Silver eagle dollars is the 1 ounce Silver "bullion" coin. Bullion silver eagles have a different finish than proof coins and they are most often sold in rolls of twenty coins. The US mint has authorized a small network of coin distributors to purchase large quantities of silver eagles as they are released from the mint each year.
(Note - if you'd like to become a coin distributor contact the USMINT and prepare to buy 5,000 coins at a time on a regular basis! : -)
These large distributors then sell these bullion 1 oz silver eagles to coin dealers in boxes containing 500 silver eagle dollars dated from the current year. Each box contains 25 rolls with 20 coins per roll or plastic tube. Coin dealers then distribute the rolls or individual silver dollars to investors and coin collectors.
Bullion Silver eagle dollars com housed in a plastic tube with a green cap. Note that during the year 1987, the US mint ran out of these coin tubes and temporarily sold some rolls in clear plastic tubes with reddish orange tops.

The US mint does not seal the individual tubes. They only seal the full boxes containing 25 rolls (500 uncirculated coins). Consequently, whoever opens the box will usually tape the green lids on the roll, so that they do not come off during handling or shipping.
