The proof version of the 2008 American Silver Eagle one ounce coins uses the same Adolph A. Weinman's beautiful Walking Liberty design as the bullion silver eagles made this year. However, these collector version coins are special "proof", struck multiple times with polished dies.

The US Mint says this about the popular walking liberty on the front:
"The obverse design features an ever hopeful Lady Liberty striding confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the strength of the Stars and Stripes carrying in her arms branches of laurel and oak to symbolize both civil and military glory."

The United States Mint sculptor John Mercanti is credited with designing the eagle reverse. It features a stylized "heraldic eagle" with a shield, and holding an olive branch (for peace) one foot and arrows (for defense) in the other foot.

The US Mint says the following about the 2008 American Eagle Silver Proof coin (Item #z86): It is

"packaged in a blue velvet, satin-lined presentation case and accompanied by a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint."

Editors note: The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is not really "hand signed" by the mint director. His signature is just a printed on the COA, as with all Certificates of Authenticity that the mint issues with other coins.
